Today's Great Gadget: Toast Tongs

The right gadget makes the job easier and more fun. Great gadgets should be celebrated. Today, I want to tell you about my Toast Tongs. Since I use them for many things besides toast, I became curious about the makers of this simple tool.

The Trudeau company distributes Toast Tongs. This group is not related to Prime Minister Trudeau but is a marketing and distribution company that began in 1889 as the General Bazaar Company. Originally an import company dealing in merchandise from ashtrays to fancy giftware, it evolved into a kitchenware and houseware supplier.

Four generations of family, descending from Mr. Joseph Arthur Trudeau, have managed this business. In 1889, Joseph was the accounting partner and one of three founders of the General Bazaar Company. Take a minute to look through your kitchen drawers and post a photo of your Trudeau products on Facebook at Glamour for Grandmothers. I was surprised by how many Trudeau items I cherish. I look forward to hearing about your favourite utensils.

I purchased my Toast Tongs at Lee Valley in January of 2021, but you will often find them in the kitchen section of department stores. At our house, removing a thick slice of toast or a bagel from the toaster sometimes involved unplugging the toaster and going in with a fork. My husband would swat the toaster handle in an upward motion attempting to toss the bread into the air. This seemed quite hard on the toaster and a bit noisy for the morning.

The Toast Tongs are coated in silicone to avoid electrocution and are designed with strength and agility in mind. We use them daily for toast, and we both use them to turn over sausages or spring rolls in the oven with great success.

To make room for new ideas, I remove unused utensils from my drawers regularly. I keep them for a few months in case I misjudged their usefulness. If I’m still not using them, I give them away because an unused gadget is a terrible waste of space.

I must admit that my eye-hand coordination skills have diminished since being encouraged to use the toast tongs but it is quicker and a lot less noisy......so I'm told by well-informed residents!

First off. Gordon you look great. Still so young!! But what a great little tool you have discovered. It would be great for the children. Because picking up a hot toast or bagel is dangerous for them. I'll definitely look for one.
