Happy Leap Day, 2020

Each Leap Year has an extra day added to the calendar to synchronize it with the seasons. Babies born on February 29th are considered Leaplings. The 29th, a bonus day, is often referred to as a Leap Day.

February 29th of 2020 marks the first Leap Day since 1980 that I haven’t planned a just-for-fun girls-ask-guys-out party. I admit I had confused Sadie Hawkins Day with Leap Day. Both celebrations traditionally allowed ladies to ask out gentlemen. Despite my confusion, our parties were a celebration of friendship and tradition. The fun times are well-documented in my blog titled My Erroneous Leap Year Tradition.

As one would expect, the tradition which began in 1980 evolved over forty years, and we realized that it had run its course. We found our families spread all over the country, and our friends began a tradition of going south in the cold months. This year, my husband and I will celebrate by looking at the photos of past parties. In 2016, we celebrated this event for the last time, and we did it in style, on Sadie Hawkins Day instead of Leap Day. In my blog, Do Traditions Have an Expiry Date? I explain my decision.

Happy Leap Day 2020 to all of you! This year let’s celebrate the fact that in 2020 a girl can ask a boy out on a date whenever she wishes to do so.

  3. What a fun tradition for everyone and the most important feature was it marked the passage of time in a dramatic manner. It’s one thing to notice how quickly a year passes but another to realize that four years have gone by. Your children started out as toddlers, grew into annoying teenagers…..just kidding of course, and before you knew it you were grandparents. Life’s mathematical progression at work!

  4. Happy Leap Year to Gord and Yourself. I believe you spend every day celebrating each day. So have a fantastic time. LOL love Gayle
