Unused Purse Straps? Try Skinny Belts!

As you know, I don’t believe in excessive downsizing, but I do believe in putting items to good use or sharing them with others. More importantly, I believe in knowing women of all ages and learning about their interests and talents. I met the creative Lee Walerius through a gifted woman named Shannon Kelley.

One day, I invited Shannon, editor and publisher of the Vintage Gypsy, to meet me for coffee. She arrived carrying a leather folder with her business logo tooled onto the front. The folder had developed a lovely patina. It wasn’t old but had been used daily for a couple of years.

Since I had admired the folder, Shannon told me that Lee Walerius, a Saskatoon artisan, made it. Soon afterward, I contacted Lee about creating a leather portfolio for me. I love my portfolio and have since commissioned one for my husband.

Lee’s leatherworking skills are amazing, but she can also knit, sew, build, cook, and ride horses. Lee listens to her customers and is open to trying new things. Recently, I asked Lee if she would help me transform some of my unused purse straps into belts. I sent photos of my drawer full of shoulder straps, and she agreed to repurpose them for me. I put all the straps into a bag and included one belt done up at the size I wear most often. I have a pair of red patent Peter Kaiser kitten pumps and a matching bag. Now, I have a thin, coordinating belt to add to any outfit.

It isn’t easy to purchase thin leather belts these days. I have found it difficult to purchase many items since the pandemic ensued. It is great to know I can call upon local, skilled artisans to help me complete a look or provide an amazing gift for someone.
