Yes, I Went to the Barbie Movie

I’m older than Barbie and never owned one because she hit the market after my doll-playing years were over. I waited to see the movie until August 18 to avoid the theatre crowds. Our viewing group included three generations of women aged 13 to 74 and one young man aged 15. I felt nostalgic as I saw the Barbie clothes and toys released by Mattel over the years. I distinctly remember the television ads from the 1960s.

The movie’s opening scene shocked me because I loved playing with my baby dolls and practicing motherhood. That scene set the mood for the tone of exaggeration that would follow. The screenwriters did a fantastic job of planting topics for later discussion. There are many layers of humour and satire woven into each scene. Conversations continue within our family and even with our friends. I will watch this movie again to be sure I take in the details I likely missed. The good things that came out of this movie include conversations, cheerful pink fashion items, and a new option for a Halloween costume. Yes, we could all go out as Grandma Barbie this year. If Barbie was human, what would she be like? She is celebrating her 64th birthday in 2023.

I would love to know if you went to the Barbie Movie and what you took from it. Have you had interesting conversations as a result? Please leave me a sentence or two in the comment space below, even if it is to say you didn’t go and have no intention of bothering.

I like to think that grandmothers have grown wise from life experience. We know that the best way to grow as individuals and make the world a better place is to listen to, and genuinely hear, each other. This is also a great time to listen to our grandkids because social commentary often overwhelms them.

Fun Facts:

A Saskatoon woman named Andrea Katelnikoff owns 3,500 boxed, pristine Barbie dolls, and her collection takes up much of her house.

Much-loved but less pristine Barbie dolls can be found in everyone’s basement or attic. The Grandmother who shared this photo has a box of Barbie clothes being enjoyed once more, this time by her granddaughter.

  1. Haven’t been to the movie but do plan to see it. I have heard mostly positive things so look forward to it.

  2. I haven’t gone, but my 18 year old granddaughter went and she thought it was very DEEP. She told me lots about it and the statements she thought it made…interesting….not sure if it will work into my schedule this time around….thanks for sharing!

  3. I have yet to see it, and to tell the truth, I hadn’t planned on viewing it. My 29-year-old daughter saw it and thought it was ok. Another girl I know who is in her late 30s saw it with friends and said, “WTH did we just watch?” Lol.
I was never a Barbie person myself, but I have an original Barbie that was my sister’s, or at least I think I do.

  4. I haven’t gone to the movie yet. But will do so. It’s interesting the different perspectives on this movie, for sure.

  5. I haven’t seen the movie, but maybe it’ll get to The Roxy one day. I had a short, dark-haired Barbie. I don’t remember having more than one. When my oldest was old enough to play with it the head disappeared somewhere. It wasn’t saved. I love Mattel for evolving her into many types, not just a fashion plate. Kudos to the people who saved them in their original boxes.
Thanks for your blog about going to the movie. Kids take away different things from it than adults, just like the Toy Story movies do.
